Is it better to be with someone the same type as me or the opposite?

My partner and I came out as almost opposite codes and someone told us that is either the best or worst possible combination depending on who you ask. Is there anything real behind this?

Neither, as far as anyone has been able to measure. Similarity of personality — by type or by trait profile — is a weak predictor of relationship satisfaction. Both folk theories, opposites attract and like marries like, get repeatedly tested and neither earns much.

What does show up consistently is not about matching at all. Two traits predict satisfaction for both partners regardless of pairing: how emotionally reactive each of you runs, and how agreeable. Higher reactivity in either partner is the most reliable negative signal in the literature. Beyond traits, what predicts outcomes is behaviour during conflict and repair — whether criticism stays about the thing or becomes about the person, whether a rupture gets repaired quickly or waited out. Those are learnable and they are not fixed by a code.

So "almost opposite codes" tells you very little about your odds. What it does tell you is where the friction will show up, and that is worth having. If one of you closes decisions early and the other keeps options open, the recurring argument will be about deciding, and it will look like one person being rigid and the other being flaky. Knowing that in advance changes it from a character dispute into a known difference to negotiate — which is most of the value people get from typing a relationship, and you can have it without believing the compatibility claim.

The more useful thing to compare is attachment and conflict style, because those are where the arguments actually come from and both of you can move on them.
